SILICOSIS
Silicosis (also known as Grinder's disease, Potter’s Rot and Stonemason’s disease) is a form of pneumoconiosis caused by inhalation of crystalline silica dust, and is marked by inflammation and scarring in forms of nodular lesions in the upper lobes of the lungs.
Silicosis is characterized by breathlessness, fever, and cyanosis (bluish skin), dry or severe cough, often persistent and accompanied by hoarseness of the throat. Patients with silicosis are particularly susceptible to tuberculosis (TB) infection.
Silica in crystalline form is toxic to the lining of the lungs. When the two come into contact, a strong inflammatory reaction occurs. Over time this inflammation causes the lung tissue to become irreversibly thickened and scarred - a condition known as fibrosis.
Compensation
You could be entitled to compensation if you have been exposed to silica dust at work. You may have come into contact with silica dust through mining, tunnelling, stone cutting, quarrying / foundry work, construction, manufacturing of ceramics and abrasives, sand blasting and many other occupations.
If you believe that you have a claim for compensation, please contact Carlisle Legal Services as a matter of urgency who will put you in touch with an appropriate and reputable firm of solicitors in your area to deal with the claim.
